Powerful quakes in Japan and Indian Ocean

Earthquakes struck both Japan and India on August 10, 2009. Although tsunami warnings were initially announced they were later recscinded.

Strong Earthquake Strikes Northern Honshu, Japan

A 6.8 earthquake struck Iwate prefecture in the northeastern part of Honshu, Japan on Saturday at 8:43 a.m. Miyagi prefecture and other areas were also hit.

The quake was followed by dozens of aftershocks, including one which registered lower 5 on the Japanese scale in Osaki at around 9:20 a.m. The center of the quake was inland. No tsunami warnings were issued.

Three people were killed and 89 injured. Landslides cut off access to some areas and buried a structure at an onsen (hot spring) where rescue workers were sent to save guests. Rail service was suspended to some areas and expressways in Miyagi Prefecture closed, police said. The quake was felt as far away as the Kanto region and Hokkaido.
